Now that it is over...

ICET 2007 was a blast. Imagining more than a thousand people—teachers, researchers, IT people, business people—together in the same place for two days. I can imagine it to be a hot bed for information exchange between schools and businesses, MOE and businesses, schools and schools, and so on.

As for me, since I am only a trainee teacher with absolutely zilch contacts (plus I'm shy too), I spent most of the time sitting at the back of the hall with all my equipment balanced precariously on my lap and sometimes listening with a gaping mouth at the possibilities of the future.

The future is as exciting or as daunting as we make it out to be.

Now that it is over, what are you going to do?

I would like to thank the organisers, facilitators and participants who shared during the conference.

On the whole, it was well-organised and I learnt some new things.

While we embrace technology and the technicalities, we will also be aware of the potential dangers. Some foreseeable scenarios are virtual sex with virtual partners (especially with 'touch technology' and more and more 'realistic' modes of engaging the senses not so far off in the future), people's "second lives" replacing their first and real lives (which is already happening now as people try to find meaning and search for identity in their online "worlds" or seek to be what they are not), and so on.

This, of course, raises philosophical questions about the existence and purpose of man.

I am aware that these are probably beyond the scope of this ICET :)

They are just some food for thought for those who care about the true human condition beyond economic prosperity alone.

A facilitator also invited a representative from Touch Community Centre to be part of the panel, which was a good move.

Thanks for accepting my comments. Just some food for thought.
